Enslaved Persons Named: Mike (driver), Jack, Peggy, Nanny, Phoebe, Louisa, Sylvia, Abby, May, Byron, Juba [Old], Daphny, Mary, Bristol, Bellah, Sally, Mary, Betty, Paul, Clarinda

On July 1, 1841, Mary E. Parsons, Liberty County, sold to William J. Way, also of Liberty County, for $10,000 “the following negro slaves being twenty two in number to wit: Mike (driver), Jack, Peggy, Nanny Phoebe Louisa Sylvia Abby May Byron Old Juba Daphny Mary Bristol Bellah and two children and Sally with her children Mary and Betty Paul the son of Mary and Clarinda the daughter of Peggy, with the future issue and increase of the female slaves…” and a tract of that “being on the Desert in Liberty County, being Lot No. 3. of an original tract, the Plantation of the late Samuel Lewis and which was divided into lots for the purpose of Division among his Divisees, containing four hundred and eleven acres, bounded on the west by the public Road to Hinesville, on the east by lands of Doctor West now Walthour’s, on the north by Lot (No. 2) number two, part of said tract drawn by Edward Pynchon, on the south by Lot number four (No. 4) drawn C.R. Lewis…” This sale was said to be authorized by an act of the Liberty County Superior Court. . Witnessed by E.W. Russell, Wm. B. Fleming, Not. Pub. Recorded on June 14, 1842, by Edward Way, Clerk.

On June 1, 1842, following a decree of the Liberty County Superior Court May 1842 term to confirm the sale, William J. Way, now said to be of Chatham County, used the aforementioned property as collateral on a promissory note to Mary E. Parsons. Witnessed by E.W. Russell, W.B. Fleming, Not. Pub. Recorded on June 15, 1842, by E. Way, Clerk. [NOTE: Written on this deed was: “Satisfied in full 30th April 1844, Geo. W. Walthour. Trustee for Mrs. Mary E. Parsons. Recorded 1st May 1844. J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.”]
