Enslaved Persons Named: Dick, Rose, Lindy

On June 8, 1840, Wm. [William] E. W. Quarterman used as collateral on a promissory note for $540 “three certain Negro Slaves named Dick, Rose & Lindy…” Quarterman had made the promissory note to Thomas Chesser; Charlton Hines had acted as security for the note, so Quarterman put up the enslaved people as security for him. Witnessed by John Girardeau, S. Spencer, J.I.C.L.C. Recorded on June 9, 1840, by E. Way, Clerk. [NOTE: Written on this deed was “The Clerk will enter the mortgage satisfied this 29th March 1842. C. Hines. Recorded this 29th March 1842. E. Way, Clerk.”]
