Comments: “Whereas Ann E. Mara, formerly Ann E. Peacock, of the State & County aforesaid [Liberty County, Georgia] is justly entitled, by the will of the late James Carter, at the death of Martha Carter, widow of said James, all of the State and County aforesaid, to one equal half part of all the negro slaves of the said James deceased, the said Ann E. Mara now makes application to Jos. [Joseph] Law Sen. & Thomas Mallard for a division of said estate…” Document said Ann E. Mara was entitled to half and William C. Way and Evelina Dunham were entitled to the other half “subject to a deduction of the appraised value of negro girl Rachel, she being a legacy by Mrs. M. Carter to Amanda Mara. The negroes Anthony, Ned & ⅗ of Sylvia, included in the general appraisement, are not subject to the above division.” “…the result of said division: viz. Lots No. 1 & 2 being as nearly equalized as possible, having respect to the connection of families, and leaving the girl Rachel out of the calculation; she being a legacy willed to Miss A. Mara, by Mrs. M. Carter; Mr. William Way & Miss Evelina Dunham drew Lot Number 1; and Lot Number 2 remained the proportion of Ann E. Mara.”
