Marriage Contract (Law/Mallard)

Enslaved Persons Named: Peggy, Joe, Nancy, William, Goliah, Nullifer, Phillis [alt: Phyllis], Nancy (Little), James, Balaam, July (Big)

On April 23, 1840, Sarah R. Law entered into a marriage contract with Cyrus Mallard, using as her trustees Peter W. Fleming, Josiah S. Law, Joseph Law. Via the contract, she put into trust “the following named Negroes being (11) eleven in number Viz. Peggy, Joe, Nancy, William Goliah, Nullifer, Phillis [alt: Phyllis], little Nancy, James, Balaam and big July.” Also transferred into the trust was ⅙ part of the Oak Hill Tract consisting of 600 acres bounded east by the North Newport River and land belonging to John B. Barnard, north by land belonging to Charles C. Jones and Nathaniel Varnedoe, west by land belonging to Nathaniel Varnedoe, and south by land belonging to Peter W. Fleming. Witnessed by Geo. [George] W. Walthour, S.M. Varnedoe, B.A. Busby. Recorded on May 12, 1840, by E. Way, Clerk.
