On February 22, 1840, William Hughes acknowledged receipt of $900 from William Smith “in full payment for a Negro Woman named Nelly and her child James age of Nelly seventeen years age of James four or five months and I the under signed William Hughes do by these presents warrant said Negroes to be sound and healthy…” Witnessed by Moses Westberry Sen’r. Recorded on March 12, 1840, by E. Way, Clerk.
