On May 16, 1838, Samuel Spencer, Liberty County, used as collateral on two promissory notes of $2085.26 and $1492.61 to Ralph King & Co “the following slaves, viz. Gibb, Rachel, Kate, Die, Mary, Tyrah, Pricilla [alt: Priscilla], Lawrence, Jacob, Will, Tom, Sam & Marlborough.” Ralph King & Co was described as the firm of Ralph King, William King & Bayard E. Hand. Witnessed by E. Stacy, J.I.C.L.C. Recorded on June 8, 1838, by E. Way Clerk. [NOTE: Written on this deed was “Canceled by a mortgage to R & W. King for $2769.89 & ten Negroes. June 20th 1839. R & W King & Co by R and W King. Recorded this 7th July 1841. E. Way Clerk.”]
