Estate Settlement (Hines)

Enslaved Persons Named: Daniel

On January 27, 1847, Benjamin T. Hines, Liberty County, certified that he had received his full share of the personal property “of the estate of my father, Lewis Hines, late of Bryan County deceased (except one negro boy named Daniel, who has not been appraised and divided, being in the possession of Rev. Wm. [William] McWhir and of which I expect no division, until the death of the said Mr. McWhir.” He then released “my uncle Charlton Hines executor of said estate from any liability to me of any of the personal property of said estate, except my proportion of the boy Daniel as mentioned above…” Witnessed by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk, and S.A. Fraser, J.I.C. Recorded on January 30, 1847, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.

The next deed was by Benjamin T. Hines, who had been appointed guardian by the Bryan County Court of Ordinary, of “James C. Hines, Lewis E. Hines, Thomas A. Hines, Georgia C. Hines and Mary J. Hines, minors of Lewis Hines late of Bryan County dec’d” and who certified that “I have received all the personal property of the estate of Lewis Hines aforesaid to which the aforementioned minors were entitled, except the boy Daniel, who has not been assessed and divided being in the possession of the Rev. Wm. [William] McWhir and to remain there until the death of the said Wm. McWhir. He also released Charlton Hines, the executor, from all future liability regarding the estate’s personal property except “their portion of the boy Daniel as mentioned above.” Witnessed by J.S. Bradwell, S.A. Fraser, J.I.C. Recorded on January 30, 1847, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.

[NOTE: On May 5, 1846, William McWhir and Charlton Hines exchanged two enslaved people. Charlton Hines took Bounty from McWhir in exchange for use of Daniel as long as McWhir lived. See https://theyhadnames.net/2019/11/29/exchange-mcwhir-hines/.]
