Bill of Sale (Allen/Chapman)

Enslaved Persons Named: William Wallis

On May 22, 1841, David Allen, McIntosh County, sold to Francis J. Chapman, Liberty County, for $575 “a negro boy about nine years of age, by name of William Wallis.” [NOTE: The name “William” was hard to read so may be a different name. It is unusual for two names to be given for an enslaved person like this but William Wallace was famous in Scottish history so perhaps he was named after him.] Witnessed by James Middleton, William Baggs, J.P. Recorded on May 29, 1846, J.S. Bradwell, Clk.
