Enslaved Persons Named: Bounty, Daniel
On May 5, 1846, William McWhir, of Bryan County, and Charlton Hines, of Liberty County and executor of Lewis Hines’ estate, executed an exchange in which McWhir “sold” to Hines for $5 “one certain negro slave named Bounty about seventeen or eighteen years of age” and in exchange Charlton Hines warranted that “the said William McWhir shall have and command and enjoy the services labors and attentions of a certain negro slave named Daniel about twenty two years old, the property of the said estate of Lewis Hines as servant and waiting man to him the said William McWhir during his natural life and that after the death of the said William McWhir, the said Daniel shall be returned to the said Charlton Hines executor as aforesaid or his successor or legal representative of said estate.” It was also agreed that if after McWhir’s death, Daniel was not returned to the estate (assuming he was alive), the estate would be paid $1000 as compensation. It was also noted that Lewis Hines was formerly of Bryan County. Witnessed by J.S. Bradwell, S.A. Fraser, J.I.C. Recorded on May 16, 1846, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.
[NOTE: Bounty was included in inventories of Lewis Hines’ estate from 1847-1855. On 1 January 1855, when the estate was inventoried and divided again, Bounty was assessed at a value of $1000 and given to Caroline C. Hines as part of his (yes, his) share of the estate. The Reverend Caroline [also seen as Catalina, Carolyn] C. Hines lived until 1923. He mostly lived in counties surrounding Liberty so records of Bounty could possibly be found in other counties. William McWhir was a prominent educator in Liberty County; he died in Chatham County in 1851. His will did not mention Daniel, or any enslaved people.]
