Enslaved Persons Named: Tenah, Jimmy, Renchie, little Jack, Jesse

On April 12, 1842, Samuel Spencer sold to William Spencer for $1200 “the following negro slaves viz Tenah, Jimmy, Renchie, little Jack, and Jesse…” Witnessed by E.B. Way, Jacob Howard. Probated by E.B. Way on August 8, 1845. Recorded on August 9, 1845, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk. 

Following that deed was a bill of sale dated August 2, 1842, in which Enoch Daniel, Liberty County sheriff, stated that John O. Baker of Liberty County had foreclosed a mortgage on Samuel Spencer, as a result of which Enoch Daniel “did proceed to levy on a certain negro slave to wit Jack, the property of the said Samuel Spencer, and did seize on said negroe, and after due and legal notice being given agreeably to the laws of said state in such cases made and provided, I the said Enoch Daniel Sheriff as aforesaid did set up and expose to sale at publick outcry at the court house of said county the said slave when the same was knocked off to William Spencer for the sum of nine hundred (900) dollars…” Witnessed by S.A. Fraser, J.I.C.L.C. Recorded on August 9, 1845, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.
