On March 19, 1845, Thomas Quarterman, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note to George W. Anderson and John W. Anderson, merchants in Savannah doing business under the name “George W. Anderson and Brother,” “the following twenty negro slaves to wit Jim, Sam, Celia, Delia, Jacky, Bob, Charles, Kessiah [alt: Keziah or Kesiah], Agrippa, Billy, Scipio, Maria, Jim W. [seen elsewhere as Jim Ward], Tenah, Andrew, Binah, Mazer, Bess, John and Nelly…” in addition to “that tract of land of the said party of the first part known as the Newport tract situate lying and being in the county of Liberty aforesaid containing five hundred acres more or less bounded on the north by the road leading from Riceboro to Walthourville, on the east by the road leading from Savannah known as the Barrington road and on the south and west by lands of Wm. [William] B. Fleming.” Quarterman promised to pay within 60 days $5200 “for value received.” Witnessed by Wm. H. Cuyler, H.W. Mercer, Jno. [John] C. Nicoll, Not. Pub. Recorded on April 5, 1845, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk [of the Liberty County Superior Court].
