n June 20, 1844, Joseph C. Wilkins, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note for $5000 to Elias Reed, Chatham County, “the following negro slaves to wit Jacob, Nella, Scylla, Philida [alt: Phillida, Dick, Nancy, Charlotte, Hazzard, Affy, ??Tystecky? John, John, Matilda, Sarah, little Ceasar [alt: Caesar], Dick, Stepney, James, Ned, Peter, Lucy, Penda, Clem, little Lucy, Rose, little Peter, June, Flora, George, Harry, Dianna, Sarah, Eliza and child, Hannah, Samson, thirty five in number…” Also used as collateral was “all that tract or parcel of land situate in the county of Liberty and state aforesaid, known as Tuskina [or Tuskind, Suskina, Suskind], containing two thousand acres more or less, bounded on the north by lands of William Norman and Jno. [John] Coleman, on the south by lands of Robert Quarterman, on the east by the public highway from Savannah to Darien, on the west by lands belonging to the estate of Jno. [John] Way.” Witnessed by Francis S. Bartow, Not. Pub. Recorded on August 27, 1844, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk [of the Liberty County Superior Court]. Recorded below the above document was a deed dated June 19, 1844, in which James D. Stevens sold to Joseph C. Wilkins, both men from Liberty County, for $100 “all that tract or parcel of land, situate in the county of Liberty and state aforesaid, known as Tuskina, containing two thousand acres more or less, bounded on the north by lands of William Norman and John Coleman, on the south by lands of Rob. Quarterman, on the east by the public highway from Savannah to Darien, and on the west by lands of estate of John Way. Together with all and singular the houses, the out houses, edifices, buildings, stables, yards gardens, liberties, privileges, easements, commodities, emoluments, hereditaments, rights, members and appurtenances, whatsoever, thereunto belonging or any any way appertaining…” Witnessed by Mos. Shefftall, not. pub. and Francis S. Bentour, not. pub. Recorded on August 31, 1844, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk [of Liberty County Superior Court].

On June 19, 1844, James D. Stevens, Liberty County, also relinquished his claim to the “said negro slaves and premises” to Joseph C. Wilkins, on condition of payment of a promissory note of $5000. “It is hereby covenanted and agreed between the parties to these presents, that if default shall be made in the payment of the principal secured to be paid to the said Elias Reed and the interest that shall accrue thereupon at any time or times on which they shall be due…” etc. [Please see link to original for details.]
