Bill of Sale (Spencer/Coleman)

Enslaved Persons Named: Sharper

On August 5, 1842, Liberty County sheriff Enoch Daniel put up for public sale “one negro boy to wit Sharper” previously belonging to Samuel Spencer. Daniel had seized Sharper after a judgement against Spencer in favor of John ? Baker of Liberty County in the Inferior Court as foreclosure on a mortgage. Sharper was “expose[d] to sale at public outcry at the Court House of said County,” and was sold to John Chapman for $500, the highest bid. The sale was recorded on October 8, 1843, by E. Way, Clerk.
