Comments: The listed enslaved people were divided into two lots. The first lot was drawn by Mary W. Bacon, and lot no. 2 was the property of the estate of the minor James W. Bacon, which was then divided into four more lots, drawn by the heirs of that estate.

“We the appraisers & dividers do certify that lot no. one was drawn by Mary W. Bacon & lot no. 1 due lot no. 2 fifty dollars & fifty cents & lot no. 2 the property of estate Jas. W. Bacon.” The appraisers then stated that the heirs of the estate of the “minor James W. Bacon” showed them the property of that estate as follows, and that they were divided into four lots:

Charles 450 Lot #1
Jack 500 Lot #2 [NOTE: “(spencer)” was written after Jack’s name.]
Billy 450 Lot #4
Teresa & child 450 Lot #3 [NOTE: It appears that Toney in the inventory below was Teresa’s child]
Murriah 400

Murriah was said to have been sold to Mrs. Bacon and that money divided among the heirs. The other 4 lots due to James Bacon’s estate were drawn as follows:

1 — Joseph R. Bacon
2 — William Spencer
3 — Miss Mary W. bacon
4 — Miss Mary J. Bacon

NOTE: See the 1834 estate inventory of Major John Bacon, which has all the names below except that of Toney, who apparently was born after 1834 and is listed as a child. (See citation below.)

These antebellum estate inventories and appraisals generally included all the deceased person’s “property,” including enslaved persons. Only those names are documented here for historical and genealogical purposes. Anyone interested in the actual property owned by the deceased may find it at the link at the bottom of the page. Names are listed in the original order, as this often gives very valuable information about family groupings or the age of children (who may be listed in age order).
