On February 7, 1853, Joseph A. Anderson used as collateral on a promissory note of $2424.04 to James N. Jones, both of Liberty County, “the following named negro Slaves to wit James Carpenter aged 27 years July 37 years of age Friday 21 years big Lucy 33 years Little Lucy 27 years Charles 23 years Jim 42 years Lenard [alt: Leonard] 18 years Richard 18 years…” Witnessed by Henry H. Jones, T.W. Quarterman, J.P. Recorded on March 2, 1853, by S.A. Fraser, Clerk.
