On August 31, 1852, Joseph Way used as collateral on a promissory note of $600 to Nicholas J. Clark “the following property to wit one negro slave named July about 35 years of age, fifteen head of stock cattle more or less marked with a split and upper bit in one ear and split and under bit in the other and branded J. also a tract of land containing two hundred acres more or less situate lying and being in the county and state aforesaid [Liberty County, Georgia] and known as the Sylvester place…” 

Below the above deed, Nicholas J. Clark signed over his interest in the mortgage and note to Charlton Hines on August 31, 1852, in the presence of J.S. Bradwell, Notary Public. Recorded on November 16, 1852.
