Marriage Contract (Norman/Jones)

Enslaved Persons Named: Nat, Nanny, Mingo, Cretia, Julia, Celia, Nanny’s infant twin children, Dinah, Matilda, Corine, John, Dianna, Amy, Frank, Louissa, Mariah, Louissa’s infant child and Sarah

On November 27, 1851, Sarah Jane Norman and James Newton Jones entered into a marriage contract, with William S. Norman and Alexander S. Quarterman as Sarah’s trustees. To protect the property she brought into the marriage, she turned over to William S. Norman and Alexander S. Quarterman “the following slaves and their increase viz. Nat, Nanny, Mingo, Cretia, Julia, Celia, Nanny’s infant twin children, Dinah, Matilda, Corine, John, Dianna, Amy, Frank, Louissa, Mariah, Louissa’s infant child and Sarah and such other personal good and chattels of which she is now possessed.” It was agreed that the aforesaid property was to be inherited by Sarah Jane Norman’s children with James N. Jones, but if there should be no children, they shall be inherited as provided in her will, with her husband’s consent. Moreover, he was to have the exclusive management of the “rent issues & profits of said property and shall have the power to sell and convey any part of said upon condition that he convey by deed property equal in value in lieu thereof to the said Trustees.” The trustees were also to have the power to sell the property based on a written request from Sarah Jane Norman and James N. Jones. Witnessed by Robert Y. Quarterman, T.W. Quarterman J.P. Recorded on February 3, 1852.
