Estate Settlement (Johnson/Johnson)

Enslaved Persons Named: Joe, March, Lucretia

On September 18, 1849, Mary Johnson, of Liberty County, widow of William Johnson, signed her name to a deed stating that she had received as part of the division of William Johnson’s estate “three negroes belonging to said Estate named Joe, March, and Lucretia” and that she had deeded them in two deeds dated May 20, 1846, to James H Johnson. Since there “may have been some irregularity in the division of the estate of said William,” she reaffirmed her intent to relinquish all of her share in William’s estate, “as widow or otherwise,” to James H. Johnson. Witnessed by Eli Futch, Wm. T Hendry, John A. Hendry, J.I.C.L.C. Recorded on May 13, 1850, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.
