Enslaved Persons Named: Stephen, Jemy [or Jenny or Jemmy]
On May 5, 1849, William Hines, Sabine County, Texas, acknowledged receipt of his portion of his legacy from his father David Hines, which was originally a legacy “consisting of Stephen & Jemy” from Mrs. Sarah Stewart, Liberty County, who had directed that they should be retained by William’s uncle Charlton Hines, executor to her will, and that after David Hines’ death, they should be sold and the proceeds distributed to David Hines’ heirs. William Hines thus released Charlton Hines from all liability on account of this legacy. Recorded in Liberty County on July 27, 1849, by John E. Fraser, D.C.L.C. [NOTE: In other deeds related to this bequest, the name “Jemy” has appeared to be “Jemmy” or “Jenny”.]
