Enslaved Persons Named: John, Chloe
On June 1, 1847, George W. Walthour, as agent for James F. Baker, put on public sale at Hinesville, Liberty County, “two negro slaves John & Chloe, the property of said James F. Baker.” They were sold for the highest bid, $401, to Simeon S. Moody, who purchased them for his wife Elizabeth Moody and her children “to take the place of a negro they had inherited and in the will of Jonathan Bacon, which negro, he the said Moody had sold for the purpose of raising the money to purchase the aforementioned slaves, John & Chloe.” Recorded by John E. Fraser, D.C.L.C., on July 23, 1849.
