Marriage Contract (Jones/Anderson)

Enslaved Persons Named: Lizzy, Trim, Sarah, Toney, Ben, Jim (an infant), Georgia

On January 18, 1843, Evelyn Elouisa Jones of Walthourville, Liberty County, Georgia, entered into a marriage contract with Joseph A. Anderson, with Charles B. Jones and Henry H. Jones as her trustees. The property she brought into the marriage was turned over to her trustees to be managed on her behalf. This property included: “all the one fourth part of that Plantation Tract or parcel of Land Containing seven hundred and eighty two acres more or less, together with all the future claims right title and interest in said Land which might fall or come to Marion S. Anderson her Heirs or assigns unto the said Evelyn E. Jones conveyed by the said Marion S. Anderson her Guardian, Joseph A. Anderson, in lieu of exchange of Lands formerly owned by J.S. Hart situate between and adjoining Lands belonging to B. Griffin, G.W. Walthour Rev’d Mr. Howe, Joseph Bacon Est of Bacon S.S. Hart James McCollough and Known as the Estate of William Anderson old plantation in Liberty County & the following Negro Slaves to wit: Lizzy Trim Sarah Toney Ben Jim an infant and Georgia, seven in number,” as well as other property she might become possessed of in the future. The parties to the contract agreed that the trustees could sell the property if so requested by Evelyn E. Jones and Joseph A. Anderson, or their survivor. Witnessed by Jos. [Joseph] Jones, James N. Jones. Probated by Joseph Jones on March 6, 1843, before James Bird, J.I.C.L.C. Recorded on March 7, 1843, by E. Way, Clerk.
