Estate Settlement (Stewart/Hines)

Enslaved Persons Named: Stephen and Jenny [or Jemmy]

On April 17, 1849, James A. Hines certified that he had received his proportion of Mrs. Sarah Stewart’s estate following the sale of Stephen and Jenny. The document stated that according to Mrs. Stewart’s will, Stephen and Jenny were to be “detained in the hands of our Uncle Charlton Hines Executor of said will until the death of our father David Hines and that after the death of the said David the property should be sold and the proceeds thereof paid over to the heirs of the said David Hines. Witnessed by William B. Fraser. Recorded on May 27, 1849, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk. [NOTE: The name that looks like Jenny here appears more like Jemmy in another deed referring to this legacy.]
