On May 1, 1849, Thomas S. Mallard, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $700 To Mrs. Barbara Screven “the following negro slaves viz. Big Moses, Little Hagar, her children Venus and Barack, Kate [NOTE: Kate may have been crossed out] Peggy Tenah.” Witnessed by B.S. Screven, E.H. Bacon Not. Pub. Recorded on May 18, 1849, by J.S. Bradwell, C.S.C.L.C. [NOTE: The pages prior to this have detailed information about financial agreements among Mrs. Barbara Screven, based on her inheritance from the “estate of Golphin,” Thomas S. Mallard, and William E. Screven, also spelled Scriven.]
