“Extra Session – Dec’r 14, 1833”
“Rev. R. Quarterman, Chairman. Mr. Samuel Spencer reported that he had conferred with Mr. Eugene Bacon the owner of Sam a coloured man and had made a condition and bargain with Mr. B. for his services for one year. Whereupon – Resolved that the contract made by Mr. Spencer with Mr. Bacon for the hire of Sam be sanctioned by this Session – and that Sam be employed and authorized to set as chief watchman & teacher & preacher over the coloured members of this church – and further – that Sam be put under the control of Selectmen who shall execute the contract with Mr. Bacon and assign Sam his field of labor – also that Selectmen open a subscription to defray the expenses of Sam that is, to furnish him with a horse, food, & clothing. “
