Enslaved Persons Named: Alonzo

On April 7, 1859, William John Way used as collateral on two promissory notes “the following slave viz the boy Alonzo aged about twelve years.”  The mortgage was to become void if Way paid the promissory notes to Thomas W. Fleming, as the administrator for Rev. John Quarterman’s estate. The first promissory note was for $255, dated March 31, 1855, payable 12 months after that to Thomas W. Fleming for the use of Revd. John Quarterman, and bearing a credit on the back of $53.55 for the interest up through March 31, 1858. The second note was for $48.05, dated March 31, 1858, payable one day after the date to T.W. Fleming or bearer. Witnessed by John S. Norman, Laurence W. Norman, John Girardeau, Not. Pub. Recorded on April 25, 1859, by S.A. Fraser, Clerk.
