Liberty County Estate Inventory – Roger Parker Saunders

Location: Liberty County, Georgia
Deceased: Saunders, Roger Parker
Date Sworn: not listed
Appraisers: Thomas Lowndes, Fergusson Parker, John Baxter [signed with his mark]
Estate Administrator: not listed
Court Officer: not listed
Date Recorded: not listed
Recording Official: not listed
Total Value of Property Appraised: 7729 pounds, 11 shillings
Value of enslaved persons: 7430 pounds
Comments: Amounts in pounds, not dollars. Date of inventory not listed but likely in mid to late 1790’s, based on inventories before and after. Names listed in groups with a single value; possibly families.

SPECIAL NOTE: In the Georgia Gazette’s March 9, 1798, issue, there was notice of an auction: “100 Negroes among whom are several tradesmen, belonging to the Estate of Roger Parker Saunders, Esq. Deceased.” These are almost certainly the individuals who were to be auctioned off. Also indicates that Saunders died before March 1798. These antebellum estate inventories and appraisals generally included all the deceased person’s “property,” including enslaved persons. Only those names are documented here for historical and genealogical purposes. Anyone interested in the actual property owned by the deceased may find it at the link at the bottom of the page. Names are listed in the original order, as this often gives very valuable information about family groupings or the age of children (who may be listed in age order).
