On June 16, 1852, Harriet S. Handley, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $800 to George W. Walthour, Liberty County, “the following negro slaves to wit Richard, Natty, Moses, Sam, January, Hercules, Susan, Lina [or Lima].” Witnessed by Henry M. Law, T.W. Quarterman, J.P. Recorded on August 27, 1857, by S.A. Fraser, Clerk. [NOTE: Written on the deed was “The within mortgage cancelled this day by the consent of all parties. Savannah Jan’y 31st 1860. Wm. Curtis. I do hereby certify that the within mortgage was satisfied in my presence. Jno. N. Staley.Entered this 5th March 1860. S.A. Fraser, Clerk.”]
