On September 21, 1855, Joseph Way, of Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note for $912 to Sarah Jane Way, guardian of the minor children of Nathaniel J. Way–Ann Caroline and Jane Augusta Way–all of Liberty County, “the following negro slaves to wit Charlotte a woman about forty two years of age, and Cuffee a boy about fifteen years of age.” Witnessed by Wm. Hughes Jr., C. Hines, W.P. Girardeau Not. Pub. Recorded on September 25, 1855, by S.A. Fraser, Clerk.
