“State of Georgia, Liberty County } Know all men by these presents, that we Toney Quarterman Col’d as principal and Peter W. Fleming as security are held and firmly bound unto the Honorable William P. Girardeau ordinary for said County and his successors in office in the sum of six hundred dollars for which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals and dated at Hinesville, this 7th day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy.” 

“The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the Ordinary as aforesaid has this day bound unto the said Toney Quarterman Col. two poor orphans of said county, minor sons of Madison Quarterman Col’d deceased for the terms of eleven and sixteen years to wit Laurence for the term of ten years and Toney for the term of sixteen years, the said Laurence and Toney to learn the art of mistery of husbandry  Now should the saidToney Quarterman Col’d  treat, use and deal with the said apprentice according to an act of the legislature in such case made and provided then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. “ 

Apprenticeship Record

“State of Georgia, Liberty County } This indenture made and entered into by and between William P. Girardeau, Ordinary for the County aforesaid of the one part and Toney Quarterman Col’d, of the same place, witnesseth that the said Ordinary hath this day, under the acts of the Legislature of said State, bound and put as  apprentices to the said Toney Quarterman, Lawrence and Toney, poor minor sons of Madison Quarterman col’d, late of Tattnall County deceased, the said Laurence and Toney to learn the art or mistery of husbandry, and after the manner of apprentices to serve the said Toney Quarterman from the day of the date of this indenture, until they arrive at the age of twenty one years, to wit Lawrence for ten years and Toney for sixteen years, all of which time the said apprentices shall faithfully obey their said master; they shall do no damage to their said master nor see it done by others, without giving him notice thereof; they shall not contract matrimony within the said term; they shall not absent themselves, by day or by night from their said master’s service, without his leave; but in all things behave themselves as a faithful apprentice ought to do, during the said term; and the said master shall use the utmost of his endeavours to teach and instruct the said apprentices in the art or mistery of husbandry and provide for them the said apprentices sufficient meat, drink, apparel and lodging and all other things fitting for an apprentice during the said time; and the said master is to give the said apprentices the schooling and education required by the act of the legislature in such case made and provided. 

In witness whereof the said parties have hereunto set their hands and seals this the seventh day of November in the year of Our Lord 1871.
