Bill of Sale (Taylor)

Enslaved People Named: Sylvia, Jean, Jack, Dick, Phebe, Sue, Hector, Sharlow and Joe

Susannah Taylor, widow, made a conveyance in trust to Thomas Bradwell and Stephen Corker, all of Liberty County on May 5, 1796 of slaves in trust for her use and after her death for Jemima Sandiford.  Witnessed by George Foster, D. R. Corker.

First: “Know all men by these presents that I Henry Wood Esquire late Sheriff of Liberty County by virtue of a writ of Fi[e]rri Facias to me directed wherein John Robarts ??? and the Adm’ors of Gideon Dupont  were plaintiffs and Susannah Taylor Admix and Stephen Corker Adm’or was [SIC] defendants did seize and expose to sale on the first Tuesday in January last agreeable to law the following Negroes to wit. Sylvia, Jean, Jack, Dick, Phebe, Sue, Hector, Sharlow, & Joe as the property of the said Nathan Taylor deceased and George Woodruff in behalf of Susannah Taylor becoming the highest bidder for the sum of six hundred and ?? dollars which being to me in hand paid, the receipt of which I do hereby acknowledge, I have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain and sell unto the said Susannah Taylor the said Negroes Sylvia, Jean, Jack, Dick, Phebe, Sue, Hector, Sharlow and Joe…” 

 

Then: “This Indenture made this fifth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety six and in the twentieth year of American Independence between Susannah Taylor of the County of Liberty in the said State widow of the one part and Thomas Bradwell and Stephen Corker of the County and State aforesaid planters of the other part, witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to her the said Susannah Taylor in hand ??? and before the sealing and delivery of these presents paid by the said Thomas Bradwell and Stephen Corker for divers other good causes and considerations she the said Susannah Taylor hath granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents doth grant, bargain, and sell unto them the said Thomas Bradwell and Stephen Corker, in trust, and for the purposes hereafter mentioned the following Negro Slaves/ that is [to] say/ one family by the name of Sue Hector, Charloe [SIC, should be Sharlow], and Joe, one other family by the name of Silvia, Jane, Jack, Dick, Phebe, and Sue a young child, to have and to hold the said negro slaves with their future increase to them the said Stephen Corker and Thomas Bradwell and their assigns to and for the only proper use benefit and behoof of the said Susannah Taylor for and during the term of her natural life and after the death of the said Susannah Taylor to have and to hold the same and for the only proper use, benefit and behoof of Jemimah Sandiford, and her heirs and to such person or persons as she the said Jemimah Sandiford shall or may by will or otherwise bequeath or convey them to and it is the true intent and meaning of the parties to these presents, that the said negro slaves hereby bargained and sold shall be held by them the said Thomas Bradwell and Stephen Corker to and for the uses and purposes aforesaid and for no other intent or purpose whatever.”
