Will Summary (published 1964)

William Quarterman of Liberty County, planter. Last Will and Testament dated October 3, 1794; probated January 26, 1795. Gives to wife Sarah; to son, John Stewart Quarterman. Reference is made to testator’s wife’s father, John Stewart. Gives to son, Richard Quarterman, daughters Susannah Quarterman, Sarah Quarterman, Elizabeth Quarterman. Children are to receive their legacies when of age or marry. Executors: Wife Sarah; son John Stewart Quarterman, friends Thomas Stevens, James Wilson, Joseph Quarterman and John Osgood. Witnesses: James Witherspoon, John Bacon, John Way. Probated on testimony of John Way.

To wife Sarah Quarterman: “one Negro Man named Nero, my riding Gray Chair Horse named Crab…”

To daughter Susanna Quarterman: “one Negro Girl named ?? Minervah ?? in lieu of land, to her , her heirs and assigns forever.”

To daughter Sarah Quarterman: “one Negro Girl named Harriet, in lieu of land, to her, her heirs and assigns forever.”

To daughter Elizabeth Quarterman: “one Negro Girl named in Sativa lieu of land, to her, her heirs and assigns forever.”

Daughters to receive legacy at age of marriage or age 18, whichever comes first. If any of the children who was bequeathed a slave in lieu of land should “loose said slave by death or otherwise” when underage, the slave was to be replaced by another slave “of about the same value.”
