Bryan County Deed of Gift (Netherclift)

Enslaved People Named: John, Rose, Paul On May 30, 1844, Elizabeth Netherclift, gifted to her grandchildren “the following named negro slaves, to wit, John aged about twenty one years, Rose aged about nineteen years, and Paul aged about twelve years.” Elizabeth Netherclift noted that in her last will and testament, dated July 8, 1835, as a widow of Bryan County had in the second item left to her son John Fife Maxwell 1/3 of her entire property. She now wished to revoke that bequest and instead to give to his children, then living or to be born, “so much of my said property as I deem a fair equivalent for the said devise and bequest,” naming John, Rose and Paul and giving them to Raymond Harris as their trustee for the benefit of her grandchildren Henry Kollock Burroughs Maxwell, Stephen Jackson Maxwell, or any other children John F. Maxwell might have in the future. If any of the children died before marriage or majority, their share was to be held for the survivors. Bryan County Chattel Mortgage (Maxwell/Remshart)

Enslaved People Named: July, Mary On April 25, 1844, John J. Maxwell, Chatham County, used as security on a debt to William Remshart, Bryan County: “the following named slaves with the issue of the females to wit my mulatto man July aged about forty five years and my negro woman Mary aged about twenty four years.” Maxwell had defaulted on an $836 mortgage on a Bryan County property known as Hickory Hill and also owed court costs of $7.62. Enslaved People Named: Sylvia, Sucky, Scipio On May 1, 1844, Henry H. White and his wife Elizabeth used as collateral on two promissory notes “the three following named negroe slaves to wit Sylvia a female aged about fifty years Sucky a female aged about sixteen years and Scipio a male aged about eighteen years.” The first promissory note was for 118.25 to Stephen Z. Collins, Alexander Mitchel and James J. Wye, merchants doing business as S.Z. Collins & Co. The second note was to H.W. Proudfoot for $164.90. Witnessed by Lachlan McIntosh. Bryan County Trust (Maxwell/Maxwell)

Enslaved People Named: Eve, Sullivan, Phoebe On February 2, 1844, Benjamin C. Maxwell, Liberty County, sold to John S. Maxwell, Bryan County, for $400 “the following named slaves with the future issue and increase of the females to wit Eve and her children Sullivan and Phoebe.” John S. Maxwell was to hold them in trust and for the use of Benjamin C. Maxwell’s living children or any that would be born to him by his present wife, Rebecca. They were not to be subject to division during the lifetime of his present wife, Henrietta [SIC*] and the children who married or reached the age of 21 in the future would not be entitled to the net proceeds, which were to be used for the maintenance and education of the unmarried and minor children. John S. Maxwell was to have the power to sell and dispose of Eve, Sullivan and Phoebe if he thought best, as long as the proceeds of the sale was reinvested in the trust. Witnessed by John P.
