Court Case – Executors of John Bacon against William Kirkland (1791-2)

Enslaved Persons Named: Abraham, Judy In 1791 and 1792, Joseph Quarterman as one of the executors for John Bacon prosecuted a case against William Kirkland, who had left Liberty County, for taking “a negro wench name Judy,” who was 17 or 18 years old, with him illegally. Quarterman apparently won his case, as the Sheriff filed an order to seize “a negro fellow named Abraham” in April 1792 and sell him at public auction. Enslaved People Named: Hagar, Phoebe, Transquilla, Sally, Maria, Ann, Limus, Alick [alt: Ellick, Allick], Juno, Daniel [Begin Transcript] Whereas Mary Clay, late of Bryan County, in the State of Georgia, widow, deceased, did, in her life time, give to her daughter Eliza C. Clay of said Bryan County, singlewoman, certain slaves, but executed no titles thereto to said Eliza C. And whereas the said Mary did die, without any last will and testament, leaving Mary Gray of Boston in the County of Suffolk, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, widow, Thomas S. Clay, of said Bryan County, planter, and the said Eliza C. Bryan County Marriage Contract (Butler/Linder)

Enslaved People Named: None On March 6, 1845, in Bryan County, Georgia, William Butler and Sophia A. Linder, a widow, entered into a marriage contract, with Jesse E. Ham and Nicholas J. Clark as her trustees. They put into a trust for her all the property she was bringing into the marriage or would ever possess afterward, to remain free from any debts of her intended husband. Rogers, Bryan County, for $1000 “the following property to wit ten negroe slaves as follows Dick aged twenty four years, Kate aged twenty three years and her two children Violet aged three years, and Frank aged fourteen months, Jim aged twenty six years, Jane aged thirty five years, Bob aged eighteen years Abraham aged seventeen years Peggy aged nineteen years and [hard to read – Elic or Erica?] aged fourteen years.” Also used as collateral was “that well known plantation in said [Bryan] County, called the Cottage, containing one hundred acres more or less.” Witnessed by William L.
