They Had Names

African Americans in Early Records of Liberty County, Georgia

African American Members of
Jones Creek Baptist Church
Long County, Georgia

The Jones Creek Baptist Church was instituted in April 1810 in what is now Long County, Georgia. As did many churches in the Liberty/Long Counties area, this church had both white and black members from its earliest days, and it kept records. These records have been summarized and published in “The History of Jones Creek Baptist Church, 1819-1985,” by Elmer Oris Parker, which includes lists (separately) of the white and black members.

Below is a list of the black members included in that book. I have obtained a copy of the original records, but do not yet have permission to post them. If you are interested in seeing them, please email me at jnscole@yahoo.com.

This list includes time periods in which the black members were enslaved, so listed only by first name or by first name with the surname of the enslaver in parentheses, and after Emancipation, when they are listed with full names. Alternative spellings have been inserted in brackets where it might be useful for searches.
