Bill of Sale (Stewart-Dunwoody/Midway Church)

Enslaved Persons Named: Jack

On January 31, 1837, Daniel M. Stewart and John Dunwoody, trustees for Martha Bulloch, wife of James S. Bulloch, of Liberty County, sold to the “Select Men of Medway Church” for $1000 “which is invested in ten shares of the Savannah Rail Road & Banking Company” a 69-acre tract of land in Liberty County near the Walthourville settlements and bounded west by the estate of Andrew Walthour and on all other sides by lands belonging to the estate of William Anderson. Witnessed by Jos. [Joseph] Jones, Edward C. Wilson. Cap. Jos. Jones probated the deed on April 4, 1837.

Beneath this deed was one from M. Bulloch [presumably Martha Bulloch] dated January 2, 1837 at Hartford Connecticut, saying “I approve of the sale of the Sand Hills Residence & its investments in Savannah Rail Road and Banking Company stocks. I also approve of sale of Negro man Jack & its investments in Planters Bank Stock, and I shall approve of any other sale or transfer of property made by my Trustees D M Stewart and John Dunwoody Esquires, with the advance and consent of my husband James S. Bulloch & its investments in stock.

[NOTE: It appears that the sale of Jack may have been a separate transaction. Not clear to whom he was sold.]
