On March 1, 1842, Joseph L. Stephens, Liberty County planter, used as collateral on a promissory note for $290 to Raymond Cay “a certain female slave named Elsey [alt: Elsy] & her daughter Peggy together with future issue & increase of said slaves…” Witnessed by Edwin Keller, T.W. Quarterman, J.P. Recorded on April 28, 1842, by E. Way, Clerk. [NOTE: Written on this deed was: “Satisfied in full this 31 January 1844. R. Cay. Recorded this 21 Febry 1851. J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.”]
