Enslaved Persons Named: Mary, Bill, Arthur

On December 21, 1840, Samuel S. Mann and Thomas Mann, both of Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note for $702 to the firm of George W. Anderson & Brother, consisting of Geroge W. Anderson and John W. Anderson, “the following negro slaves with their future issue and increase of the females (viz) Mary and her child [space with what looks like a plus sign] Bill and Arthur…” [NOTE: It is not clear whether Bill is Mary’s child or whether that name has been left blank.] Witnessed by W.B. Fleming, N.Pub. Recorded on January 25, 1841, by E. Way, Clerk.
