On May 20, 1840, Wm. [William] P. McConnell, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note for $4500 to George W. Walthour “the following eighteen named Negro Slaves: Joe (Driver), Billy, Hannah, Sally, Dinah, Judy, Lucinda, Morris, Jack, Grace, Rose [or Ron], Old Joe, Old Hannah, Tenah, Phebe [alt: Phoebe], Clarrinda [alt: Clarinda], Jerry, Susan…” in addition to a 30-acre tract of land in Walthourville, bounded east by “lands of Busby,” south by lands of Wm. Q. Baker and Thos. [Thomas] Quarterman, east by land of West and north by lands of Wm. N. Way and “said West.”
