Toy, Girardeau and Stafford accused of “Negro Stealing”

At Chambers Monday the 7th day of October 1809

John Toy, John Girardeau, and Thomas Stafford, who was in the Custody and Confinement of William Hendry, Constable for said County, on a charge of Negro stealing and was committed by Jonathan Gaulden Esqr on the oaths of Elizabeth Gaulden and Uriah Wilcox, that is to say, the said John Roy, on the oath of Elizabeth Gaulden, and the said John Girardeau on the oath of Uriah Wilcox, was brought up on Habeas Corpus, agreeably to the Constitution and laws of this State. [John Toy then ordered to give $1000 security to appear at the next Superior Court session. Toy engaged the services of Joseph Law Esqr and Thomas Mallard Esqr as security for the bond. John Girardeau and Thomas Stafford were released for insufficient evidence.]
