We the undersigned at the request of the Executors of Ann Pray late of Bryan County have taken into consideration the condition of the above named Negroes for the purpose of fixing a value of their hire for the year 1834 in families – and after duly considering the number of working hands, their quality and condition – together with the number of children and invalids or infirm persons attached to each family as incumbrances have affixed the following prices to each family (and which will also found on the reverse or opposite page) as being in our opinion, a fair valuation under all circumstances, bearing in mind the provisions of Ann Pray’s will in relation to her anxiety for their humane treatment. The executors to pay doctor’s and surgeon’s bills, and those hiring to treat them humanely and cloth them comfortably.

“Appraisement or estimate of the fair value of the following Negros belonging to the Estate of Ann Pray, late of Bryan county, for their services or hire for the year 1834”

[NOTE: Because this appraisal specified that it was taking into account the people unable to work (or be hired out), I believe that the right hand column labelled “Children” likely is for children too young to be hired out. The left hand side probably includes family members, children on otherwise, who were of working age. It is not clear to me what the + signs mean. The values in parentheses were written in by some names but very faintly – perhaps in pencil or a pen that faded. No values were seen written in for Bob’s family.]
