Marriage Settlement (Quarterman/Jones)

Enslaved People Named: Cyrus, Sibby, Marcia, James, London

As part of a July 30, 1862, marriage settlement between Keith Axson Quarterman, Liberty County, Helen Louisa Jones, also of Liberty County, and her trustees, H.H. Jones and A. Maybank Jones, also of Liberty County, certain property was reserved for Helen’s separate ownership and use. The property included promissory notes of substantial worth and “also five negro slaves as follows Cyrus a man about thirty six years of age, Sibby a woman about fifty years of age, Marcia a woman about twenty four years of age, and her two children James aged three years and London aged one year, now in the possession of the said Helen L. Jones.” Rules for inheritance were established. Witnessed by T.Q. Fleming, J.S. Fleming, R.H. Quarterman. Probated by T.Q. Fleming on September 23, 1862, and recorded on the same day by S.A. Fraser, Clerk. 

 

[Second Document] K.A. Quarterman stated that he had received from Mrs. E.S.L. Jones, executrix for Joseph. Jones, through her attorney H.H. Jones “the following property of any description of Helen L. Jones to wit…” and lists the same property as listed above.
