Land Rent Contract
For 1867 – V. Great 1st

Georgia, Liberty County } This Indenture made this fourteenth day of March Eighteen Hundred and Sixty Seven between V. Grest of said State and County of the First part and the Undersigned Freedmen of the Second part Witnesseth that the said V. Grest the first part doth rent unto the said Undersigned Freedmen of the Second part all the land on the place known as Hall’s Knoll lying South of a certain Canal running from the Darien Road West across said place understood and agreed on by the partners together with all the Buildings on the place (dwelling house only excepted) for Agricultural purposes only and the said Freedmen promise to pay to said V. Grest the sum of fifteen hundred dollars for the use of said place for the payment of which well and truly to be made unto the said V. Grest on or before the first day of January next they bind themselves collectively and individually. They further agree that no portion of the crops made by them on said place shall be removed from said place until the said sum of fifteen hundred dollars is paid unto the said V. Grest as aforesaid. Provided nevertheless that if it becomes necessary to sell the crops or any part thereof to raise said sum of they may do so by placing the same in the hands of said V. Grest for sale: And it is also agreed on by the parties that should any laborer become idle a majority of the laborers on said place may expel such idle laborer And it is further agreed by all the said parties that the rent above specified is for the year Eighteen Hundred and Sixty Seven (1867) only. This agreement was fully and correctly read over in the hearing of the Undersigned Freedmen at the time of its execution. Witness our hands and seals the day & year above written.
