William West, Liberty County planter, used as collateral on a debt to James Holmes, merchant, both of Liberty County on April 16, 1795: “The following negro slaves to wit, Will & his wife Nanny and their two children Patt & Will also Ishmael [or Ishmall] & Tony, now at Mr. Croft’s Plantation…” Witnessed by Henry Wood and N. Bacon. Sworn and recorded on 1797-06-09 by Wm. [William] Willson. Given “as Security for the pay’t of fourteen hundred & seventy dollars & 28 cts to be paid me by the first March next, if paid I promise to give it up, on forfeiture & John Jones promises in behalf of Mr. West to produce the negroes & to be sold for the payment of the same.
