On [left blank] February 1861, William Cumming Handley, Liberty County, used “the following negro slaves” as collateral for a debt of $1476.93 to Joseph S. Claghorn and John Cunningham, of Chatham County, doing business under the name of Claghorn and Cunningham: “Charles, aged twenty eight years, Caty aged twenty six years, and Bacchus aged thirteen years, together with all their natural increase and issue.” Witnessed by Jno. V. Farner, James McHenry, Not. Pub. Recorded on 21 February 1861 by Jesse Brewer, Clerk.
On 2 February 1861, George T. Handley, Liberty County, used “certain negro slaves” as collateral for a debt of $1112.22 to Joseph S. Claghorn and John Cunningham, of Chatham County, doing business under the name of Claghorn and Cunningham: “Clara aged sixteen years and Lawrence aged thirteen years.” Witnessed by N.B.
