Bryan County Marriage Contract (Wade/Baker)

Enslaved People Named: Sylvia, Nancy, Jane, Flora, Morris, Billy

On March 17, 1864, Dr. James A. Wade, Bryan County, and Anne Eliza Baker, same place, entered into a marriage contract with Charles H. Baker and Charles M. Harden, same place, as her trustees. As part of the contract, Wade agreed that the following enslaved people, currently in Anne’s possession, would be put into a trust for her: “Sylvia, a woman aged about sixty-eight years of age, Nancy a woman about thirty-six years of age; Jane a girl about fifteen years of age, Flora a girl about ten years of age, Morris a man about twenty seven years of age and Billy a man about thirty-seven years of age.” Any other property she was to possess in the future would also be put into the trust, not subject to his debts, and to be used for her use and benefit. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on September 1, 1864.
