On May 31, 1856, John Pray Maxwell, Bryan County, used as collateral on a promissory note to Wm. [William] H. Burroughs, , for $1856.66 “the following named negro slaves to wit August about fifty two (52) years of age, Nancy about forty two (42) years of age Peter about fifty (50) years of age Catharine about twenty nine (29) years of age Joe about twelve (12) years of age Silvia [alt: Sylvia] about nine (9) years of age Samuel about six (6) years of age and Lucretia about (4) four years of age with the future issue and increase of the female slaves.” Witnessed by E.S. Law, S.S. Maxwell. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on July 1, 1856.
