On April 8, 1856, in Chatham County, John. P. Hines, Bryan County, used the following named individuals to secure three promissory notes, each for $4050, endorsed by William Crabtree, merchant of Savannah, Chatham County. Hines had made the notes for his purchase of “negro slave property of one William Ziegler and Crabtree had acted as security with the understanding that Hines would use these enslaved people to secure him against loss for doing so.
“The following named negro slaves to wit William aged about 24 years Bella aged about 30 years Peggy aged about 8 years Sarah aged about 5 years Dinah aged about 25 years Betsy aged about 4 years Tyra aged about 22 years Sally aged about 1 year Minda aged about 30 years Hector [or Hester] aged about 25 years Stephen aged about 26 years Dublin aged about 21 years Amos aged about 20 years Hetty aged about 18 years Petter [alt: Peter] aged about 19 years Emick aged about 26 years Grace about 1 year Jennette aged about 30 years Abney aged about 50 years Lizette aged about 50 years William aged about 32 years with the future issue and increase of the female slaves…”

The following record was found in Chatham County deed records:
On February 27, 1854, William Ziegler, Chatham County, sold to John P. Hines for $16200 “the following negros to wit. William about twenty four years old, Bella about thirty Peggy about eight Sarah about three Richard about thirty four, Nancy about thirty, Edward about ten, Caroline about four, Osborne about three, Lizzie about one, Julia (mulatto) about six months, Aggy about forty five, Nelly about twenty, Daphne about twenty six, Smart about twenty Fortima about fifty Tom about eighteen Henry about sixteen Joe about twelve. Dinah about twenty five, Betsey about four, Juliett about three, Tyra about twenty two, Salley (mulatto) about one Minda about thirty Hector about twenty five and Jemima about forty years old, all of which I warrant sound and healthy in body and mind.” Recorded in Chatham County Superior Court on April 21, 1854.
