1809 Bryan County Chattel Mortgage (Keating/Young)

Enslaved People Named: Judy, Yabo, Toby, Charlott [alt: Sharlott], Abraham, Polydore, Sally

On June 20, 1809, Richard Thorp Keating, planter of Bryan County, used as collateral on a promissory note of 678.54 to Thomas Young, Chatham County, “the following negro slaves to wit Judy about thirty years of age, Yabo about twenty years of age, Toby about thirty five years of age, Charlott about 30 years of age, Abraham about eighteen years of age, Polydore about twenty five & Sally about twenty two years of age.” Witnessed by Charles Harris Jr. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on November 18, 1809.

Written below this deed was the following: “Rec’d Savannah 10th Feby 1822 of Mr. R.T. Kating the full amount principal & interest of the bond referred to in the within mortgage. [Signed] Thos. Young.” Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on January 7, 1827.
