Enslaved People Named: Moses, Cudjoe, Nelly, Mary Ann, Billy, Gibb
On May 4, 1816, Joseph Law, administrator of the estate of Thomas E. Law, deceased, used as collateral on a promissory note of $2000 to Joseph Jones, Liberty County, “four certain negro slaves, named Moses, Cudjoe, Nelly (a girl about fourteen years old) and Mary Ann [alt: Maryann] (a wench about eighteen years old).” Witnessed by Charles West. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on May 20, 1816.
On November 4, 1820, Law recorded that since “one of the above named negroes, to wit, MaryAnn, has deceased, and another of the said negroes, to wit, Moses, has been sold to Doctor Charles West” with Joseph Jones’ consent, Law had substituted “other two negroes, to wit, Billy and Gibb, fellows.” Witnessed by E. Baker. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on November 28, 1820.
On April 17, 1822, Joseph Jones acknowledged that he had received full satisfaction for the balance due on the above bond. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on June 13, 1822.
