Bill of Sale (Baisden/Varnedoe)

On May 2, 1826, “a negro man slave named London, about twenty four years old, the property of the said Josiah Baisden,” was sold to Ann E. Mara for $400. London had been seized from his home by Liberty County Deputy Sheriff Edward Way, and sold at public auction on May 2, 1826, at the Riceborough Courthouse in Liberty County to satisfy a judgment obtained against Baisden by Ann E. Mara, the administrator of the estate of Morgan Mara. Hathaway was the highest bidder, but was actually the attorney in fact for Ann E. Mara. On the same day, John D. Hathaway transferred ownership of London to Nathaniel Varnedoe, “guardian of William Baker, orphan of Thomas Baker Jun. deceased.” Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on May 4, 1826.
